What do I need to know to make the most out of my practice?

Here are some tips:
* Put the events of the day aside and create a little yoga oasis for yourself. Be attentive and focused on what you are doing. It is important that you listen to what your teacher is saying to you during the class. If you find your mind wandering or distracted, gently bring it back to your practice.
* Do not look around and watch other students. Don't compare yourself to others. Yoga is not a competition. Keep your attention on yourself, and/or the teacher. Know that the other students are giving you the same privacy.
*Please do not chew gum during your practice. The chewing disrupts a quiet mind, and there is the risk of choking.
* Be patient with yourself. Listen to your body, and go at your own pace. Any discomfort in a pose should be mild and temporary. Pain is a sign of a physical problem or incorrect practice - ease up and relax and do not worry about the outward form of the pose. Modify your position in such a way that it is easy and comfortable, and then go just a little deeper. By recognizing your body's limitations and not pushing yourself too hard too quickly, you will avoid injury. A blend of 50% will and determination and 50% gracious allowing is the best formula. Increased flexibility will come with time and practice.
* Ask for help at any time from the teacher during class. Make sure you let the teacher know when you are pushed to your edge. After class you are welcome to ask any questions.
*Be open to corrections from the teacher, whether verbal or hands-on. Take all corrections in the spirit of friendly guidance.
* Try to do the best you can, even if something seems odd. Be forewarned that the first time you go to a class, it's always a bit strange, even overwhelming. Relax your inhibitions. Let yourself surrender enough to have an experience.
* Evaluate how you feel. Do this in a general way immediately following the class. Do you feel better now than when you arrived? Don't forget to consider the way you feel on an emotional/psychological level, too. Evaluate yourself again the next day. Chances are, you will be sore. This just means that you need another class as soon as possible. Be aware of the difference between soreness and pain. If you're in pain, something went wrong. Again, come back as soon as possible and communicate your pain to the teacher.
* Be positive and enjoy!
